Laat het zich ontvouwen
Laat het zich aandienen
Zonder angst voor stilstand
Zonder stilstaan
Geen vooruitgang

Promise
Great expectations
Of what is
And what will be
Full of surprise and miracles

Let it unfold
Let it come
No fear of stagnation
For without standing still
No progress

A beautiful song that touches me deeply is this one by Ane Brun. I hope you will like it as much as I do.

The woman’s pose in my drawing is inspired by a photo by Brett Stanley.

Mother Theresa

A new full moon is a new ‘full’ blog :)!

——-

Everything that is being put in motion, moves forward. Every movement gives birth to a change. Even when it looks like you are doing nothing (no-thing), you’re doing something. It is impossible to do nothing. Just by being, you set something in motion. Everything influences everything.

Maybe you have heard of the butterfly effect? This theory tells the story about how minor perturbations such as the flapping of the wings of a distant butterfly influences a chain reaction of unforeseen consequences and even months after can cause something gigantic as a tornado. The idea that small causes may have large effects in general, shows us that what we think, say or do has an impact, however big or small.

This text (in Dutch) continues in Rosalie’s blog on her website. Her text inspired me to make this illustration. I hope both the words and the drawing will inspire you as well.

Project Circles is a co-creation of Rosalie Heefer and Leonie Verbrugge.

I felt I wanted to make a ‘winterwonderland’ drawing, but not a drawing you expect when thinking of winterwonderland (I would think of Christmas trees, twinkling stars, reindeers, red noses and snow and such. You?) In my drawing I honor this intelligent and loving creature and place it in a natural environment. Yeah, I know, putting clothes on a pig is not natural, but hey, use your imagination ;). As a person who only eats plant based food, I see animals as our fellow earthlings. And I think they deserve our respect and care, like we take care of our fellow humans. Let us take care of the animals we’re surrounded by. Let them be in their natural habitat and let them relax with their offspring. I try to depict that idea in this illustration, one with a message. I hope it touches you and that you consider this thought when doing your shopping for Christmas. I do not want to bug you, but just give you something to chew on. With love, Leonie.

PS. If you subscribe to my newsletter (which is occasional and non-annoying, I promise!) via the subscribe-tab on the left of my website, I’ll will send you a link to this full illustration. You can download it and use it as a wallpaper on your phone or print it. Love to hear from you!

Hi there, just a short blogpost about my latest contribution to Zusterhood (Sisterhood), a snail mail community for women in art.

In Sisterhood every two months, a ‘sister’ is linked to another ‘sister’ from the collective, with whom you exchange a theme letter. This months theme was Blue Monday. A theme in which I recognize myself quite well.

I wrote about this sometimes harsh voice you can hear inside yourself. A voice that tells you that you don’t do enough, you’re not good enough, you should to this and that. Your ego so to say, who loves Blue Mondays and is a hard thing to quiet.

Then I wrote about this soft voice, in the silence. A voice you can hear when you are quiet and when you’ve put your ego in the backseat. You’ve taken over control and you can finally listen to this voice. Maybe it’s your source. It sounds like a sweet friend who takes you as you are and tells you that you can go outside and have a cup of tea in the sun, instead of proceeding your TO DO-list. It tells you to take a walk in the woods and listen to the wind in the trees. It shows you that you can give your worries to flow of the stream and that everything is in its place and time. That’s, in short, what I’ve tried to depict when I made this little box for my sister. I hope she’ll like it and she’ll hear the soft voice. Ssh…

Over the past month, my desk was yellow, not just because of the sunlight through the window, but also because of the theme of this ‘Sisterhood’ month, being ‘Recipe for yellow’.

Read this blog post in English below.

Scheel kijkend. Lachvitaminen in geel, zo gezegd!

Sisterhood is a snail mail community for women in art and every two months, every sister is linked to another sister from the collective, with whom you exchange a theme letter.

This month, I wrote my letter to Manon, and I sensed that she could use some cheer. With the theme of this month ‘Recipe for yellow’, the color was a great foundation for this. My recipe for yellow became a recipe for cheerfulness.

An envelope with the borrowed Banana from Andy Warhol, letters written with saffron ink, a personal drawn card with a memory of Cinque Terre: ‘It was 10 years ago, the air pregnant with blooming yellow broom. We made a pitstop along the shore. We drank coffee on a doily next to the car and I was pregnant with our first child.’

If you unwrap it even further, you can find even more in the letter. A recipe for banana bread with a hand-painted banana bread at the front, and of course a hand-written letter to ‘sister’ Manon, a garland of dancing yellow cranes, as cheer-up garland. A tube of saffron, a hand-lettered quote by Josephine Baker and as icing on this letter cake Josephine in her banana skirt, squinting. Smile vitamins in yellow, so to speak!

You can download it as a wallpaper for your smartphone. Sign up for my newsletter here to receive a link to this download. And of course, in the future, you will be the first to receive a wallpaper for the new month and more news about illustrations, books and exhibits. See you in your mailbox!

Oh, and here you find the recipe for the banana bread with coco and lemon (in Dutch)!

When you think of ‘paradise’, what do you think of? What is paradise to you? These questions pop in my head while working on an art project in which I participate.

Waar aandacht in is gestoken.

English

Zusterhood (Sisterhood) is an art project that puts the art of letter-writing in the spotlights again. To connect, to inspire and to meet. To say it in the words of Zusterhood: ‘Real connection. No Facebook like, but a letter to which one has given its full attention. A letter written with love. And to discover work of other inspiring women, a couple of times per year a mini-exhibition on your doormat, strive together for the art of letter-writing and exhibit together as art collective.’

When I was young I used to write a lot to my penpals and I love to receive real letters on paper, so I decided to engage in this project. Six times a year you receive an art-letter from a zuster (sister) and at the end of the year all the art-letters will be shown together in an exhibition. How great is that?

The theme for this month is ‘paradise’. The word paradise brings me to a memory of my youth. I must have been about 7 years old and my dad painted flowers, butterflies and bees on my white sneakers. I wore them with proud. This memory is the source of my paradise. I’m lying in a field of flowers, bees are buzzing, butterflies are fluttering and the ladybugs find their way through the grass. Do you feel it?

With this months wallpaper I hope to take you with me to my paradise. And you might want to listen to this song to bring you in the right mood. Enjoy!

PS. And…what about the contents of my art-letter? Of course a hand-written letter, the drawing you can download here as wallpaper, a hand drawn cassette-tape with the link to the song that brings you in the right mood, two paradis-y lists (one with things and one with books), a small booklet with drawings of field flowers, a beautiful quote by Rumi and a little bag with field flower seeds. Hopefully the sister I send it to will appreciate it :)!

Yelena was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia and now lives in Los Angeles and Alexandra lives in Saint Petersburg. What I love about their drawings is the magical, mysterious and melancholic themes in a beautiful balanced use of colour. Their images ask to have another look, to look further, longer. Both Yelena and Alexandra have an eye for detail which adds an extra layer to their illustrations. I’ve tried to put something of that feel in my November wallpaper. Hope you like it.

You can download the wallpaper right here, for free. Put it on your phone and enjoy. Happy new month of November!
