Afgelopen jaar werkte ik aan het ‘Bindboek Ons Kloosterpad’, een boek over het Brabantse kloosterleven en ook een dagboek voor onderweg op je wandeltocht langs kloosters aan Ons Kloosterpad. Het beschrijft het leven in en de geschiedenis van de vijftien kloosterlocaties die je tijdens het wandelen van dit pad tegen komt. Een leven in stilte, soberheid en dankbaarheid. In het boek komen mooie verhalen naar voren; persoonlijke verhalen van nonnen en monniken en historische anekdotes, prachtige fotografie en kunst. Ook is er ruimte om je eigen overpeinzingen en mijmeringen te noteren.

Ik heb geprobeerd dit alles te gieten in een vorm die eer doet aan de inhoud. Een vorm die zowel het oude, de historie, als het nieuwe (bijv. wat kunnen kloosters nu voor ons betekenen?) met elkaar verbindt.
Het boek is gedrukt in 10 steunkleuren en zwart en heeft naast een omslag met prachtig werk van illustrator Ludwig Volbeda, een losse stofomslag met daarop Ons Kloosterpad (de route langs 15 kloosters in Noord-Brabant) in de vorm van een soort schatkaart. In het boek zijn drie verschillende soorten papier gebruikt; naast het papier waarop de verhalen en interviews te lezen zijn, zijn er transparante vellen toegevoegd met een inspirerend woord (bijv. dankbaarheid of barmhartigheid) ter overdenking en ook vind je in het boek op een dikker papier ansichtkaarten die je eruit kunt halen en kunt versturen.

Alle vijftien pleisterplekken krijgen in dit handzame boekwerk een eigen schitterend gelay-out hoofdstuk met interviews, tips en tops en zelfs lege pagina’s waar de wandelaar na afloop zijn of haar persoonlijke ervaringen kan noteren.‘

De route is 330 km lang en kun je wandelen in 15 etappes. Een pelgrimage. Daarom vind je onder de flap van de omslag nog eens vijftien wandelkaarten die je langs deze kloosterlocaties leiden. Het is een echte inspiratie-bundel geworden, dit alles bij elkaar gehouden met een gouden elastiek.

In samenwerking met Simone Kramer en Jasper van Deurzen was dit een prachtig project om te doen waar ik intuïtief aan heb gewerkt; het ontwerp ervan ontstond in een ‘flow’ onder mijn handen. Het Bindboek is gedrukt bij Drukkerij Tielen in Boxtel. Vrijdag 30 april werd Ons Kloosterpad geopend door de Commissaris van de Koning en een zuster van het Klooster Sint Josephsberg in Megen. Daarbij werd tevens de bundel overhandigd.

First of all, may I thank you for your vote on my dream, about which I wrote in December? I received a lot of response and feedback. Wonderful to see how much you sympathize and are willing to contribute ideas.

And then my dream took another turn. By expressing the fact that I was looking for a space and what my ambitions with this space would be, I was given an amazing proposal. A shared space in De Gruyter Factory in Den Bosch. I was asked to consider it, and I did. After considering all the cons (30 minutes from home by bike, more rent) for a minute, I said ‘yes’.

The studio, which I share with photographer Irma Bulkens, is located in a recently renovated part of the De Gruyter Factory. The place where people used to make jelly and candy, has now been invaded by creative companies, which now includes me. The location of my dream may have changed, but it still represents the same. Here too, I illustrate and design and hope to be giving workshops.

As a customer loyalty program, the store, The Gruyter, used to give children a small gift every week, also referred to as ‘the treat of the week’. And now, I am privileged enough to enjoy our studio every (work) day in a beautiful cultural heritage building, which,
to me, is nothing short of a treat!

A brief description of the movie: Ireland, 9^th century

The 12-year old Brendan spends long hours working hard with his uncle, Abbot Cellach and the other monks. They reinforce and raise the walls of the abbey to help them better protect themselves against the Viking raids. Then, he meets the elder brother Aidan. With his help, Brendan discovers his talent for illustrations, and from that moment on, he has just one goal: completing the valuable Book of Kells. But in order to do this, Brendan has to travel beyond the walls of the abbey, where great danger awaits him… There, he meets the girl Aisling, who will aid him in his quest. Will Brendan manage to complete the book and will the residents of the abbey resist the ever increasing threat of the Vikings?

A beautiful story, with even more beautiful illustrations and design. You could pause the movie at any given time, to enjoy a richly illustrated frame; each and every frame is an illustration in itself.

The characters have a graphic design, based on simple shapes. The head of the cat, for instance, is half a circle and the fingers are little more than long strokes. Combined with the atmospheric backgrounds and the warm use of colors, it all reinforces each other. There is an incredible attention to detail, for instance in the Celtic knotwork that is frequently used as a properly applied style element. In addition, you’ll see influences of medieval illustrations, illuminated manuscript. It is incredible how the illustrators and animators have managed to give these influences their own interpretations and incorporated them in this animation.

The movie was released back in 2009, but I had never heard of it. I’m glad I found it when I did. And not to mention the extremely pleasant soundtrack, available at Spotify.

In the picture’s background you can see a diamond shape patterned wallpaper. I decided to continue this pattern on the girl’s dress after having cut out the original one. Then I embroidered a wide range of moustaches and beards. I did not cut off the threads but just let them hang, so the picture would get a more edgy touch.

The moustache the girl is holding gave me the idea and the rest came naturally. A contrast of soft versus hard. Love and anger. Young and old, men versus women and good versus evil. The sweet picture of Irma challenged me to do something that might be a little shocking. Through my bearded men the picture gets a total different meaning and the photo becomes secondary to the illustration.

After three experiments we see that our disciplines, photography and illustration, can supplement, enrich but also alienate each other. As said before, in the near future we want to figure out what we can do with this new approach. We want to tap into a new market and develop works that combine photography and illustration and eventually publish and sell our art.

A careful layed out composition of a water jug and a piece of soap lying in the sun. As if the water is warming for a bath yet to come.

The pattern of the basket under the water jug was the motive I used for embroidering the geometrical forms. It reminded me of endless forms I used to make with a spirograph. Inspired? Try it yourself.
I based my colour palette on the pastel colours of the objects in the picture.

At the bookstore in town I bought a card display rack. It serves me as an ‘inspirational carousel’. The surface of the magnetic board next to my desk wasn’t big enough for all the beautiful cards and booklets I like to be surrounded with.

Even an old photo booklet with pictures of the caves of Han inspire me!

In my carousel there are illustrations and drawings from Camilla Engman, Annelies Verbrugge, Yelena Bryksenkova, Kim Welling, Mirdinara, Uppercase, Oh Marie!, and Dottie Angel. And a booklet with a remarkable binding method from COS and a small book about beach and shorebirds. Even an old photo booklet with pictures of the caves of Han inspire me!
