I took the challenge of drawing each and every day like other artists who took part in the Inktober challenge. For this new wallpaper for November I used one of the last drawings I made. All the works I drew for Inktober are black and white, I didn’t use any color. So this wallpaper is a little tryout to see how color works in my black and white drawings. Hope you like it. It was not so long ago that it was common that these girls started working at a young age instead of going to school and go studying. A lot has changed since then, but there are still so many girls who don’t get the opportunities we’ve had or our daughters will have.

Today, the 11th of October, is International Day of the Girl Child. UN Women: ‘There are 1.1 billion girls today, a powerful constituency for shaping a sustainable world that’s better for everyone. They are brimming with talent and creativity. But their dreams and potential are often thwarted by discrimination, violence and lack of equal opportunities. There are glaring gaps in data and knowledge about the specific needs and challenges that girls face.’ (read further)

So let’s stand with the global community to support girls’ progress everywhere. Let girls be girls.

Every October artists all over the world take on the INKtober drawing challenge and do one ink drawing a day the entire month. This first day of October I made an inky wallpaper for your phone.

In the picture’s background you can see a diamond shape patterned wallpaper. I decided to continue this pattern on the girl’s dress after having cut out the original one. Then I embroidered a wide range of moustaches and beards. I did not cut off the threads but just let them hang, so the picture would get a more edgy touch.

The moustache the girl is holding gave me the idea and the rest came naturally. A contrast of soft versus hard. Love and anger. Young and old, men versus women and good versus evil. The sweet picture of Irma challenged me to do something that might be a little shocking. Through my bearded men the picture gets a total different meaning and the photo becomes secondary to the illustration.

After three experiments we see that our disciplines, photography and illustration, can supplement, enrich but also alienate each other. As said before, in the near future we want to figure out what we can do with this new approach. We want to tap into a new market and develop works that combine photography and illustration and eventually publish and sell our art.
