A beautiful song that touches me deeply is this one by Ane Brun. I hope you will like it as much as I do.

The woman’s pose in my drawing is inspired by a photo by Brett Stanley.

At first I was just a little seed.

My roots feeded me and the sun gave me her loving warmth.

Slowly I grew a little bigger and a little stronger, day by day.

Then one day my shell became too tight.

It felt as if I could hardly breathe any longer.

Just as I felt I could no longer hold on, my shell broke free.

Suddenly, there was this soft pink light surrounding me.

That light, it came from the inside of me.

Carefully I began to unwrap the layers of my self, one by one.

First the tough ones on top,

then the softer ones in the middle,

and finally I gently unfolded the most vulnerable ones on the inside,

covering my heart.

With every layer I became more aware of who I really am.

And what it is that I am here for.

It is, so I can shine my light.

Sing my own precious song.

The light of my heart, shines for you.

So it can warm and sooth you, just like the sun once did for me.

This is the circle of life.

It is only when we let go of what’s holding us back,

that we get to reach our true destination.

To be exactly who and what we are meant to be.

I am soft, I am pink, I am light and I am love.

I felt I wanted to make a ‘winterwonderland’ drawing, but not a drawing you expect when thinking of winterwonderland (I would think of Christmas trees, twinkling stars, reindeers, red noses and snow and such. You?) In my drawing I honor this intelligent and loving creature and place it in a natural environment. Yeah, I know, putting clothes on a pig is not natural, but hey, use your imagination ;). As a person who only eats plant based food, I see animals as our fellow earthlings. And I think they deserve our respect and care, like we take care of our fellow humans. Let us take care of the animals we’re surrounded by. Let them be in their natural habitat and let them relax with their offspring. I try to depict that idea in this illustration, one with a message. I hope it touches you and that you consider this thought when doing your shopping for Christmas. I do not want to bug you, but just give you something to chew on. With love, Leonie.

PS. If you subscribe to my newsletter (which is occasional and non-annoying, I promise!) via the subscribe-tab on the left of my website, I’ll will send you a link to this full illustration. You can download it and use it as a wallpaper on your phone or print it. Love to hear from you!

Hi there, just a short blogpost about my latest contribution to Zusterhood (Sisterhood), a snail mail community for women in art.

In Sisterhood every two months, a ‘sister’ is linked to another ‘sister’ from the collective, with whom you exchange a theme letter. This months theme was Blue Monday. A theme in which I recognize myself quite well.

I wrote about this sometimes harsh voice you can hear inside yourself. A voice that tells you that you don’t do enough, you’re not good enough, you should to this and that. Your ego so to say, who loves Blue Mondays and is a hard thing to quiet.

Then I wrote about this soft voice, in the silence. A voice you can hear when you are quiet and when you’ve put your ego in the backseat. You’ve taken over control and you can finally listen to this voice. Maybe it’s your source. It sounds like a sweet friend who takes you as you are and tells you that you can go outside and have a cup of tea in the sun, instead of proceeding your TO DO-list. It tells you to take a walk in the woods and listen to the wind in the trees. It shows you that you can give your worries to flow of the stream and that everything is in its place and time. That’s, in short, what I’ve tried to depict when I made this little box for my sister. I hope she’ll like it and she’ll hear the soft voice. Ssh…

Over the past month, my desk was yellow, not just because of the sunlight through the window, but also because of the theme of this ‘Sisterhood’ month, being ‘Recipe for yellow’.

Read this blog post in English below.

Scheel kijkend. Lachvitaminen in geel, zo gezegd!

Sisterhood is a snail mail community for women in art and every two months, every sister is linked to another sister from the collective, with whom you exchange a theme letter.

This month, I wrote my letter to Manon, and I sensed that she could use some cheer. With the theme of this month ‘Recipe for yellow’, the color was a great foundation for this. My recipe for yellow became a recipe for cheerfulness.

An envelope with the borrowed Banana from Andy Warhol, letters written with saffron ink, a personal drawn card with a memory of Cinque Terre: ‘It was 10 years ago, the air pregnant with blooming yellow broom. We made a pitstop along the shore. We drank coffee on a doily next to the car and I was pregnant with our first child.’

If you unwrap it even further, you can find even more in the letter. A recipe for banana bread with a hand-painted banana bread at the front, and of course a hand-written letter to ‘sister’ Manon, a garland of dancing yellow cranes, as cheer-up garland. A tube of saffron, a hand-lettered quote by Josephine Baker and as icing on this letter cake Josephine in her banana skirt, squinting. Smile vitamins in yellow, so to speak!

You can download it as a wallpaper for your smartphone. Sign up for my newsletter here to receive a link to this download. And of course, in the future, you will be the first to receive a wallpaper for the new month and more news about illustrations, books and exhibits. See you in your mailbox!

Oh, and here you find the recipe for the banana bread with coco and lemon (in Dutch)!
